Brands Technorati: Virtual PC, Virtual Machines, Installation, Windows XP, Tutorial
In the previous tutorial, demonstrated how to create a virtual machine with Virtual PC 2007. If you have not yet created a virtual machine, you better read the previous article "Tutorial - Creating Virtual Machines in Virtual PC 2007" in order to follow this article.
In this tutorial we explain how to install a new operating system in virtual machine created. After installing the OS in virtual machine, we have available a brand new virtual computer with a clean operating system, ready to use as a new PC it is.
Let's start to the tutorial.
TUTORIAL - Installing Windows XP in a Virtual Machine

Tutorial - Enhancing the Performance of Virtual PC 2007
We started by opening the Virtual PC 2007 with the virtual machine created in the previous article.
Click on "Start" to start the virtual machine. And hopefully some time before we get to the boot screen.
We have a virtual machine waiting for a cd so you can start installing the operating system. We have two ways to deliver the CD to the virtual machine, one is through the traditional way, the reader of CD / DVD of the host computer by clicking "CD -> Use Physical Drive F:" (in your case the letter of the drive may be other).
If the OS you want to install is a. Iso in the host computer, then choose the option "CD -> Capture ISO Image ..." and choose the corresponding ISO file, which will be emulated as a cd and operate similarly to a drive of cds / dvds normal.
Irrespective of previous choice, so the virtual machine has access to the cd operating system, should press the "Enter", or make a restart the virtual machine through the keys "Right ALT + R". After one of these operations, the virtual machine detects the cd to install the OS (in this tutorial will be Windows XP) and start the installation of it.
From this moment, the installation of the operating system should be in the same way that a computer would be real. Tutorial demonstrate in the rest of the installation of Windows XP. If this is the operating system they are installing are so lucky. If another operating system, should follow the normal steps. If find any problem, leave a comment, which try to help you. In the first screen of the Windows XP installation, we should press the "Enter".
In the second screen, we must accept the license to use Windows XP, clicking the key "F8".
Then we must configure the partition where we install Windows XP. Only we have the virtual disk created when creating the virtual machine, which currently is not format. To do this, press "Enter", which will lead to the display format of the virtual disk.
Screen formatting the virtual disk, using the arrow keys "up" and "low" choose the type of format we want, "Normal" or "Quick" (Rapid), and type of the file system "FAT" or "NTFS" . He is currently the most widely used file system "NTFS" as it allows working with larger files, such as for example the files. HDV. For this tutorial choose the first option, "Quick NTFS. You can choose the best fit for your situation. After only have to press the "Enter".
After formatting, which may take a few minutes, if not chosen the option "Quick", copying the files from the Windows installation starts automatically.
After completion of the copy of all installation files (which process may take several minutes), the virtual machine performs an automatic restart. Should not do anything, if it takes a few keys, such as the installation CD is still in the drive, we can re-enter the menu of the Windows XP installation. Therefore, we should expect a little more while the installation continues ... ...
After a few minutes, is shown in the display configuration of the language and regional settings. On this screen click on "Customize."
NOTE: To return to the host computer's mouse, press the "ALT law." Can knock out a small mouse in the virtual machine, but do not worry, this will be resolved at the end of the installation.
In this screen, we should change the settings for our country, in both fields.
Then click on "Language" and the screen that opens, click on "Details" to configure the keyboard. The default is the keyboard "English." To add the keyboard of our parents, we should click "Add ...".
In this screen, we should choose the appropriate settings for our parents. And click "Ok".
We now have the keyboard of our parents and english keyboard. As we will not need the english keyboard, seleccionamo it and click Remove. Then click "OK."
We are presented with a message that tells us that the keyboard can not be removed because it is in use, but it will be removed in the next restart. click "OK."
- In tab "Advanced", select also our parents. and click "OK."
The regional settings are completed, we click "Next" to continue.
The next screen allows the customization of the system. Can enter your name and the name of your organization and click "Next."
On the next screen to enter the key of Windows XP that are installed. And click "Next."
In the next screen choose the computer name, and introduced the administrator password if there is a wish. And click "Next."
Then choose our time zone and set the time and date. And click "Next."
After a few minutes, we presented the network configuration menu. In this step we can select "Typical Settings" and click "Next."
On the next screen, leave the options pre-defined and click "Next." If a network, choose the other option, and enter the domain of the network.
- The installation continues for a few more minutes ...
- After some time, Windows XP starts the first time in the virtual machine.
At startup of Windows XP are asked to define some settings in the system. Choose the options that are best suited to your situation. In almost all menus simply click "Next." If have any questions, leave a comment. Try to help.
- Finally we are into our new operating system.

Finally, to solve the problem of rats, we install the VM aditions. To do this, click on "Action -> Install or Update Virtual Machine Additions" or pressing the keys "Right Alt + I".
Click "OK" in the notice that is displayed indicating that a CD is inserted in the drive of the virtual machine.
- On the next screen click "Next."
After the installation completed, simply click "Finish" and make a restart the virtual machine.
After the restart the problem is already solved mouse, or is no longer trapped within the area of virtual machine. The drag is also noted that improved as the VM additions installed a new graphics card in the virtual machine.
Reached the end of this extensive tutorial, with a brand new installation of Windows XP in a virtual machine.

May 27th, 2008 at 23:08
Thanks for the comment Jessica. To install the Linux method is the same, however, it is necessary to make minor adjustments, it is not a Microsoft Operating System.
Soon I will write a tutorial on how to install a version of Linux (Red Hat or Ubuntu) in Virtual PC 2007.

hi! Very good tuturial!
I am daily user of VirtualPC, but has also spent at VMware, and actualimente also use the (more stable) VirtualBox.
Thus, the use VirtualPC to run VM's with MS operating systems, and VirtualBox corer for MAC and Unix / Linux. It is the best combination!
If you have other solutions in addition to these three warnings.
Keep up the good work!

I had problems using ISO, and someone had also been resolved, I think that the program does not recognize. NGR and while. ISO did not have much success.
Any tips?
August 4th, 2008 at 22:50
Evandro @
Hello, I never had problems in the use of ISO file. NGR The files are not actually incurred. Have to be even ISO files, and you can not rename a file NGR to ISO, because they are totally different formats.

@ Jorge Reis
Hello Jorge, each virtual machine, when it comes to licensing, works in the same way a normal computer, or for each virtual machine has actually bought a license for the operating system.

Gil, good day!
I am in a strange situation. My Virtual Machine (Windows 2000) only identifies the server machine (Windows XP) when it is connected to my internet modem. That is, when the modem is not connected, there is no communication between virtual machine and server machine (connection is disabled). You know what is happening?
Thank you!

@ Tiago Domingos
Only with this information is difficult to help you, but probably the problem occurs because the connection type that is configured in the Virtual Machine. The ideal would be using NAT. So to share the connection to the net on both machines, host and Virtual Machine. I hope I have helped.
Greetings.

leandro @
The virtual machines are often used to test for infections with viruses, because they do not normally pass to the host. But you never know. In computing it is possible.

@ Roger
Nothing of Roger. It is a pleasure to help to solve these problems.
February 18th, 2009 at 21:23
@ James
Neither Virtual PC nor Virtual Server support 64-bit systems. To use a 64 bit system, you have to use the Hyper-V Windows Server 2008.
February 20th, 2009 at 12:27
Optionally, you can also use the VMware Server that is freeware, or, if for a system with AMD 64bit CPU, it is also possible to use VirtualBox AMD64.

@ paisanouy
Thank you. It receives great praise for our work.
March 18th, 2009 at 0:18
@ Paulo
To install Windows 98 SE, the disk must be formatted in FAT or FAT32. The latest operating systems use disks formatted in NTFS, it should be the case of your disk. So is receiving the error that states. Create a new partition and format in FAT32 you. Thus should have to install Windows 98 SE.
March 18th, 2009 at 0:19
@ EricVidal
Absolutely. Virtual PC works as a normal window of Windows. You can minimize it to qualqer time and move on your host operating system.
March 18th, 2009 at 0:22
@ EricVidal
You need to put the system in 32 bit color.
March 18th, 2009 at 0:27
@ Roberto Silvano Camargos
The Drive of DVD should work properly when the virtual machine is turned on or off. I do not understand the problem.

@ Pedro
This problem is not common that has never happened. So I can not help you.
I do not think the problem has to do with being the host of the same CD.
March 31st, 2009 at 10:08
Peter:
This problem is really rare but it happens. The causes are many:
1. - The machine can be processed and still could not update the screen. (ie If you are looking for devices, it may take a long time depending on the settings, so, I try to install a configuration 'Default'.)
2. - The drivers of the graphics card in the Host OS may have a problem and the solution is then re-install them or update them to a newer version. (Note: If an ATI 'X2', you may have to use old drivers or the Omega unofficial, although the support is very bad ... I recommend nVidia or Matrox. Personally I have a nVidia 9800GTX2 and everything works swimmingly .
3. - In the 3rd case, the situation is: the drivers of the adapter of the host are correct, the virtual machine is not processing "raw" or is trying to detect devices in the system. In this case, one of the two: either the CD is corrupted \ broken, or your graphics card does not support the resolution of the default installation of windows.
If not any of these assumptions ... sorry could not help.
Good work!

With the information provided can not help much, the problem is that you can not access the drive, CD / DVD from the Virtual machine?
May 1st, 2009 at 10:04
@ pietro
If I understand correctly, after choosing the. Iso, you must restart the machine so that it detects that it has a. Iso and then press it.
To restart the virtual machine can use Action -> Reset or Right Alt + R.
May 1st, 2009 at 10:08
@ Bruno
Without the iso image, it is impossible to boot.
First you have to get the. Iso, otherwise you can not install.
You can also use a CD or DVD, using the option "Use physical drive.

June 19th, 2009 at 0:31
@ Guilherme
I have since mid-March the Windows7B installed on a Host and VM. As soon as I get a tempinho, I do a screen-shot and sending the link.
Until then I would advice:
I have a machine with DualCode (AMD64X2) and tried the same in SingleCore (IntelP4EE) and things do not go smoothly. Once the VM just load the Host hung, however in my DualCore everything goes perfectly!
If I esqucer screen-shot of me remember! lol

PROBLEM: I did all the step by step to success, I have Vista Basic and install XP with Virtual Máq, everything looked good but I noticed that XP does not detect the Máq Virtual hardware into the USB port (Printer, Pendrive, iPod, Photo ...) or CD's or DVD's the unit of litura of records, what to do?
June 29th, 2009 at 9:37
Renato @
This problem is more or less rare but it happens and is a question of two things:
- A (s) USB port is not compatible with (at least) v1.1b;
> Solution: There is. The VPC was established to consider the operation \ compatibility to v2.0 but without much support and hence the cap be correct v1.1b.
- The drivers installed the USB ports are damaged;
> Solution: Uninstalling all the drivers for USB, re-start the machine (Host) and ascertain the result.
I hope I have helped!
