64bits

In recent times, particularly because the SharePoint 2010 will only work in 64-bit environments, has been talking a lot of Virtual Machines to 64 bits. However there is much confusion on this issue. The purpose of this paper is to clarify some of these questions.

Create Virtual Machines with 64-bit

What are the requirements to have a virtual machine to 64 bit? The first is to have a host system also 64 bits.

You can not have virtual machines in a 64-bit host system to 32 bits.

64 bits Microsoft has also created some confusion by saying that Virtual PC 2007 supports 64-bit. This 64-bit support just means that Virtual PC 2007 runs on an operating system to 64 bit, does not mean that you can run Virtual Machines to 64 bits.

4 of virtualization solutions that Microsoft has only two virtual machines support 64-bit:

  • Virtual PC 2007 - No support
  • Virtual Server 2005 R2 - No support
  • Hyper-V for Windows Server 2008 - Support
  • Hyper-V R2 for Windows Server 2008 R2 - Support

In short, currently, only with the operating system Windows Server 2008 and Hyper-V Virtual Machines can run 64-bit. The host computer must also have support for hardware virtualization (active).

With operating systems Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7 with Server 2003, we can not run virtual machines to 64 bits.

To have Virtual Machines on these operating systems, we can use other non-Microsoft solutions such as VMWare or Virtual Box.

VMware Workstation

Currently we are carrying out tests with VMWare WorkStation and the results are being pretty interesting. In the next article we will share some more information about the VMWare solution.

And what solutions do you use Virtual Machines for the 64-bit? Share. :)
